After a winter of planning and a spring of growing, I have finally achieved my gardening goal: attracting a hummingbird to my garden!

I was looking out the back bedroom window with my cat Phaedra when I saw one fly by outside. I ran to the bathroom window (which overlooks the back deck) and lo and behold, there she was, sipping out of my red salvia in my deck "windowbox"! She didn't stay very long but it was thrilling to see my dream come to fruition - even if the summer is almost over.

I think I will plant these again next year. Not only do I love the bright red colour, but they bloomed much faster than the other seedlings. My blue Salvia plants are still opening, my second Penstemon is now blooming, and I finally see a bud on my Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila).

Oh, and I am also considering putting up a hummingbird feeder as well next spring!
